Middle Office Risk Manager

Overview:
An established European firm with a worldwide presence in the sustainable and renewable energy industry is seeking top talent. Energy production from renewable resources is the key component of the world’s future energy mix. Renewable raw materials have the potential to permanently replace fossil fuels and simultaneously solve the problem of surplus agricultural production in North America and elsewhere. Our client is in the process of becoming a worldwide leader in 21st-century alternative green energy solutions. With our client’s fuels cutting greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels, we are showing the way forward in climate protection.

Role:

  • An individual contributor to managing all Middle Office functions on a trading floor.
  • Architect and maintain a frictionless, well-thought-out set of Middle Office processes, avoiding silos and continuously increasing efficiencies.
  • Provide services (e.g., position and PnL reporting) and oversight (e.g., limit oversight) on the commercial organization in collaboration with other support functions, such as IT, Risk, and Quants.
  • Position reporting: Work closely with Trading, Operations, Asset Managers, Accounting/Finance, and 3rd party brokers to ensure transactions are accurately understood, recorded, reconciled, and reported.
  • PnL reporting:
  • Daily and monthly.
  • Reconcile any PnL discrepancies between Trading, Operations, Brokers, and Accounting.
  • Explain the daily changes in PnL.
  • Optimize relevant systems and the processes and people’s roles as they pertain to the lifecycle of the deal. 
  • These include the trade entry system (for which this role carries the primary responsibility), the database of internal and external/market data, the VaR system, and various back-office systems. 
  • Maintain an effective information flow between such systems with the help of IT and Quants.
  • Ensure the systems sufficiently cover our commercial operations for effective reporting, correct valuation, and risk assessment.
  • Improve such systems to ensure information is captured accurately and timely.
  • Report policy-based limit utilization and related breaches to Risk and Management.
  • Establish IPV (Independent Price Verification) for all price curves used in valuations.

Qualifications:
Our client is pragmatic in looking for a good mix of the below qualifications, with an eye on maximum achievable breadth and depth:

  • University degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or another related field. 
  • Experience in middle office functions in commodity trading.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of Middle Office experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, work in a team, handle priorities under pressure, and maintain complete confidentiality over critical matters.
  • Preferences include:
    • Specific experience in Ags (corn, soybeans) and Energy – including renewable energy, especially; RNG.
    • Knowledge and experience of plant operations involving commodities.
    • Knowledge of VBA, Python, and dashboarding.

Other
This is a full-time, salaried, and bonused position, located at the company’s North American headquarters in the northeast and reporting to the company’s CRO. While there is some flexibility to work from home occasionally, this position requires the employee’s presence in the office.
